Gum Disease Therapy

Scaling and root planing (deep cleaning) is one of the most effective ways to treat periodontal (gum) disease before it becomes severe. Scaling and root planing helps to clean below the gum line where the toothbrush and dental floss can not reach. This procedure removes bacterial plaque and calculus and helps reduce inflammation associated with periodontal disease. A local anesthetic may be needed to numb the gums in order to ensure complete removal of bacterial remnants.

We may decide to place an antibiotic (Arestin) into the pockets between your teeth and gums following scaling and root planing. The antibiotic will help speed healing and prevent infection.
